What Does Physiotherapy Treat?

Physiotherapy is a regulated healthcare discipline focused on restoring movement, reducing pain, and improving physical function after injury, illness, or surgery. It is commonly sought for musculoskeletal injuries, sports-related strain, motor vehicle accident recovery, post-surgical rehabilitation, and chronic conditions affecting mobility.

Treatment is hands-on and individualized. A physiotherapist assesses how your body is moving, identifies the source of dysfunction, and builds a plan that addresses both the immediate problem and the patterns contributing to it. Sessions typically combine manual therapy, targeted exercise, and patient education.

Our Approach to Physiotherapy

James Zhou, MPT, brings advanced training in Stecco Fascial Manipulation, Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization (DNS), dry needling, and electrotherapy. His approach goes beyond symptom management, looking at how the body functions as a system and addressing root causes of pain and movement restriction.

Techniques James uses, depending on the patient's presentation:

  • Fascial Manipulation (Stecco method): manual therapy targeting fascial densifications that restrict movement and contribute to pain
  • DNS rehabilitation: movement re-education grounded in Developmental Kinesiology, used for spine, posture, and complex chronic cases
  • Dry needling: intramuscular stimulation for trigger points, muscle tension, and nerve irritation

James works alongside the chiropractic and osteopathic practitioners at Cloverdale Chiropractic, which allows for coordinated care when a patient's needs cross disciplines.

Outcomes from Physiotherapy at Cloverdale Chiropractic

Reduced pain and improved mobility Patients typically report meaningful reduction in pain and improved range of motion within the first several sessions, particularly for acute injuries and post-surgical rehabilitation.

Return to activity Whether the goal is returning to a sport, managing a physical job, or getting back to daily activities without limitation, treatment is structured around your functional targets, not just symptom relief.

Long-term movement quality DNS and Fascial Manipulation address the underlying movement patterns that contribute to recurring injury. Patients who engage with their home program tend to maintain their improvements well after discharge.

This varies depending on the nature and duration of your condition. Acute injuries often respond within 4 to 8 sessions. Chronic or complex presentations may require a longer course of care. James will give you a realistic expectation after your initial assessment.

Dry needling uses thin needles to target trigger points and muscle tension, and is grounded in Western anatomy and physiology. It is distinct from acupuncture, which is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine principles. Both are available at Cloverdale Chiropractic through different practitioners.
